12th April

Weather: S to SW f1-3, sunny, dry, warm.

Late-morning, a female Goshawk was briefly picked up flying northwards, quite low over Bunting and Bog Fields, by Steve Gale and Geoff Barter, but it was soon lost behind trees. This constitutes the third site record (after singles in 2005 and 2010). Rather intriguingly, a large accipiter was seen in the area last week (GB), so could suggest that a Goshawk is using the area. A small, but colourful arrival took place, with the year's first Willow Warblers, 5 Wheatears, 2-3 Common Redstarts and at least 6 Swallows north.

Canons Farm: 3 CORMORANT (flying NE), 1 GREY HERON, 14 COMMON BUZZARD, 1 GOSHAWK (♀ seen flying low, moving north, above Bunting/Bog Field, 81st species recorded this year), 2 SPARROWHAWK, 3 KESTREL3 PHEASANT, 7 ROSE-RINGED PARAKEET, 4 GREEN WOODPECKER, 2 GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER, 1 LITTLE OWL (Bog Field), 100 STOCK DOVE, 250 WOODPIGEON, 12+ SKYLARK, 6 SWALLOW (singles north), 200 CARRION CROW,  3 ROOK, 75 JACKDAW, 2-3 COMMON REDSTART (1 or 2 ♂ around back of Reeds Rest Cottages, a ♀ in bushes alongside Harrier Field),  5 NORTHERN WHEATEAR (4 in Infront George/Skylark Fields, 1 Bog Field), 1 COAL TIT (Page's Acre), 4 LONG-TAILED TIT, 4 NUTHATCH, 4 BLACKCAP (Ruffett Wood, Circle Field), 2 WILLOW WARBLER (Lunch Wood, 82nd species recorded this year), 2 CHIFFCHAFF, 30 LINNET, 6 GOLDFINCH, 7 YELLOWHAMMER

The year's first Common Redstart turned up in that favourite haunt of the species, The Slangs. It was feeding quite happily at the northern end of the footpath for at least a couple of hours. 5th April

Weather: WSW f2-3, sunny spells, isolated showers. Milder.

A quiet morning was followed by a positively splendid afternoon. Star bird was a  Ring Ouzel, that spent up to two hours along the edges of Tattenham and Chipstead Meadows, often alighting on the trees surrounding the horse stables. The years first Swallow headed northwards, a little on the late side. Not to be outdone was a marked passage of Common Buzzards, 18 of which headed NE to SE, including groups of 8 and 5. The local breeders were kept busy escorting these migrants away from 'their' airspace. A single Red Kite was also a high easterly mover. Farm work in Broadfield encouraged a feeding frenzy of corvids and pigeons. Finally, it would appear that the Red-legged Partridge of a week ago hasn't left us yet, as it was seen happily sat on top of a fence post in Harrier Field.

Canons Farm: 26 COMMON BUZZARD (of which 18 were overflying migrants, flying NE to SE), 1 RED KITE (flying east), 1 SPARROWHAWK, 3 KESTREL, 3 PHEASANT, 1 RED-LEGGED PARTRIDGE (Harrier Field), 12 ROSE-RINGED PARAKEET, 150 STOCK DOVE, 150 WOODPIGEON, 18 SKYLARK, 1 SWALLOW (north over Skylark Field, 77th species recorded this year), 2 MEADOW PIPIT, 3 PIED WAGTAIL, 1 RING OUZEL (♂ along field edges close to horse stables - Tattenham/Chipstead Meadow, 78th species recorded this year), 2 REDWING (horse stables), 1 WHEATEAR (♂ Skylark Field), 2 CHIFFCHAFF, 1 TREECREEPER (Ruffett's Wood), 2 ROOK, 250 CARRION CROW, 100+ LINNET, 1 SISKIN (Tattenham Meadow), 5 YELLOWHAMMER
