Regular bird ringing sessions commenced in early spring 2014, taking place at 'The Scrub', in the Banstead Woods sector of the patch. Ringing takes place every Friday; everybody is welcome to pop along to view the sessions but we do organise special ringing demonstrations which are regularly announced and designed to show you what ringing is all about, its value to science and to bird recording at the patch.

What is ringing?
Ringing is a method of marking birds in a way which identifies them as individuals so that their movements, survival and site fidelity (among many other things) can be studied. A small, lightweight metal ring is fixed to each bird's leg, with a number giving the bird its unique identity so that the bird can be reported and its history tracked should it be re-trapped or recovered. Birds are safely caught using mistnets and are taken back to the ringing station where the ring is fitted, measurements are taken and they are finally released by handlers licensed by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO). Data are sent to the BTO where it will be used for learning more about birds, their populations and movements.
